Keep Your Head Warm in Winter: Best Tips for Staying Cozy

Keep your head warm in winter

Do you remember being a child and being told to keep your hat on outside? In the summer, that was always about protecting you from overheating and preventing your scalp burning but in the winter, it was always a way to ‘keep the heat in’ so that you don’t get too cold. You may have laughed at your parents then, but it isn’t really a laughing matter when you consider the rate of getting sick in the winter months.

You want to keep the heat where it’s supposed to be, and you also want to avoid chattering teeth as a result of the cold. It’s important that you keep your head warm, too, because of how cold air impacts hearing health. Your ears are very much a part of your head and when you’re not keeping your head warm, you’re going to expose your hearing health to a myriad of problems. So, what could you be doing to keep your head warm this winter?

Manage the moisture.

Sweaty foreheads and scalps are a reality in the winter months and when you’re active, the first place that you sweat is your forehead. When you choose a hat or mask for the winter activities that you involve yourself in, you need to choose wicking materials that will soak up the sweat and prevent your head from rubbing uncomfortably against it. Synthetic materials like polyester and nylon are good for this but merino wool is better.

Get the right hat.

Hats are so versatile aren’t they? Caps in the summer, wooly hats in the winter and even festive ones at Christmas – hats are excellent accessories.

However, they’re also great for you to stay warm. Aside from the style you choose, you need a hat that’s going to keep you warm. Choosing something waterproof on the outside is also a good idea. It should be wind resistant and warm, and it should be the right size for your head, too.

Keep your ears covered.

If you don’t want your ears getting too cold, add a muffler or a set of ear muffs to keep your ears warm. Your hat should ideally cover your ears but if not, add something more. Ear muffs can be fun and they can be perfect if you love to ski!

Just choose earmuffs that work for your style and get the right size so that they don’t fall off. They’re also great if you have hearing aids to keep them dry.

Keep your neck covered.

Your neck being exposed is going to make you feel the cold more than you expect. Keeping your neck covered is important so that you can keep your major neck arteries warm, your spine warm and your head warm, too. Your neck needs to be covered to ensure that you stay toasty.
