Garage Care: How To Look After Your Least-Loved Room

For many, the garage is the least-loved space in the home. Despite being quite large and practical, it doesn’t receive nearly as much attention as the kitchen, bathroom, or bedrooms.

Fortunately, if your garage is undergoing neglect, this post can help. We take a look at how much you can show the room a little tender loving care and ensure it continues to serve you for years to come. Here are our suggestions.

Garage Door Maintenance

Use Hooks And Racks

Garages can sometimes start to look like scrap yards with items strewn all over the place. Without proper organization, the space quickly descends into chaos.

Therefore, invest in some hooks and racks and keep all your tools, gardening equipment, and other items at the edge of the room. If you have bikes in the garage, find some way to mount them on the walls. Keep them organized and off the ground, not cluttered everywhere haphazardly.

Maintain The Space

You can also take better care of your garage by properly maintaining the space. Keeping an eye out for leaks, cracks, and pests helps to keep the structure itself in good working order.

Maintaining the space is surprisingly easy because most garages are simple constructions. Replacing roofing or problematic concrete takes a couple of days at most before the space is back to operating at 100 percent of its potential.

Fix The Door

Another great way to take care of your garage is to replace your garage door. When it stops working properly, the space instantly becomes significantly less practical.

Modern garage doors fix many of the problems with older up-and-over designs. More recent concepts improve reliability and prevent unscheduled breakdowns in the future.

Use The Overhead Space

If you have a smaller garage, you can also try making better use of the overhead space. Storage and ceiling racks are ideal for seasonable items or those you don’t need to access as frequently.

For example, keeping a kayak at ground level is impractical and takes up an enormous quantity of space. However, putting it high up gives you more flexibility and means you can sometimes park your car or van below, keeping it out of the elements.

Keep The Garage Accessible

Another pro tip is to keep your garage accessible so that it remains practical as a place to store your items. Keeping things closer to the entrance reduces the need to rummage and prevents it from turning into a self-storage unit where you can’t get to anything you need without moving stuff out first.

Put Labels On Everything

You can also try putting labels on everything to take better care of the space. Marking your drawers lets you quickly identify items and know where to look for the things you need.

If you’re not keen on putting sticky labels everywhere, you can try using metal plates or badges. You can even try carved wood panels to identify the contents.

Keep It Well Lit

Finally, ensure you keep your garage well-lit. Extra LED lighting helps to brighten dark corners and improve the usability of the room.
