Your home is probably one of the biggest investments you will ever make in your life. You should invest your time and money into your home to prevent the need for expensive repairs later on. Here are some home repairs that you really can’t put off and ignore.
Grouting or Caulking
Caulk isn’t expensive, but it does a very important job. It keeps water out of place that it shouldn’t be. Inspect your shower, bath, and around all windows and doors on a regular basis to look for places that need to caulk. If you spot any, get it done right away as water damage is much pricier to put right.
Protect Your Foundation
A crack in your foundation can be a problem for your home’s value and structure. If your doors aren’t closing like they once did, this is a good sign your foundation has moved. Inspect the foundation along the outside of your house to spot any cracks or signs of movement. If you have a crack larger than 3/16 of an inch, you will need help from a professional.
Roof Repairs
A leaky roof can cause a lot of problems such as structural damage, mold, and loss of personal property. Take action against leaks as soon as you find them and you can save yourself a lot of money.
Service Your AC Filter
Dirty air filters can cause your AC system to work harder than it needs to and drive up your utility bills. Make your AC unit last longer and save yourself some money by cleaning your filter once a quarter. If you find issues, call in some emergency HVAC repair.
Rotting Decks
Wooden decks can be vulnerable to rot, especially if they don’t get a lot of sun. Sometimes, a few boards or one section will rot, whereas in some cases the rot is more pervasive. This can make the deck unsafe and cause the rails to get loose.
You will need to replace all the rotting boards. For older decks, you should replace all the boards so you know they’re solid and to keep the deck looking consistent. Consider composite decking as a replacement. This is more expensive than wood but it doesn’t rot. If tree branches cover your deck and block the sun out, trim some of them back to let in more light and keep the deck dry.
Clogged Gutters
Leaves, twigs, and other debris can pile up, which will cause water to spill over the top. This can then freeze on the sidewalk and driveway, creating a slipping hazard. If the water isn’t getting into the downspouts and flowing away from the house, it can leak into your property. Cleaning the gutters a couple of times a year to keep the water moving. Consider installing gutter guards to keep them free of debris.
Plumbing Leaks
Any kind of leak can do a lot of damage to your home. Address any plumbing problems as soon as you notice them. After this, learn how to keep your plumbing in good condition to minimize issues later on.
