Maximizing The Space In Your Small and Awkward Rooms

There’s nothing more coveted than a big house with plenty of space that gives you the option to play around with decorating (check out Ways To Improve Your Home So You Can Enjoy It More for some inspiration!). However, not all houses are created equal, and sometimes you’ll have that one room that is small or oddly shaped, and you don’t really know what to do with it.

Neglecting this room isn’t the answer! There are so many ways to maximize space no matter what your situation is – a small room, a studio apartment – there are plenty of solutions and ideas to make a small space feel balanced and cozy.

The Secret to Having More Space in Your Home

Find The Right Furniture

Whilst this may seem rather obvious, you mustn’t just consider the size of your furniture – but the practicality of it. Is squeezing in a bunch of small pieces really better than buying a couple of bigger pieces? When you’re trying to optimize space, what matters is that the furniture you buy is practical and serves the space. For example, if you want to create a cozy room for leisure, finding the perfect tv stand that offers you space doubles as a storage unit will probably work better than trying to fit different pieces of furniture in Tetris style.

Section The Room

This is a fantastic solution for those in studio apartments, but also is a great way to make the most of that oddly-shaped room you’ve dumped all your storage in. Dividing the space into sections will offer a hip and modern feel, and you can use large open units, or classic dividers, to achieve this effect. It’s also a great way to turn the space into a guest room, as you can design the space to optimize privacy too.

Muted Colors

Perhaps a controversial opinion, but bright colors in a small room can make you feel cramped. Bright colors need room to breathe, and unless done really well and complemented with a lot of natural light, will actually make the space appear smaller. Instead, going for muted tones and pastel colors will draw in the natural light, accentuating the space, but will give the illusion of longer walls. A big bonus is that light pinks, beige, and ivory look beautiful with minimalist design, meaning that you can really take advantage of sparsely decorating the room in order to save space.

Draw The Eye Up

Oftentimes, rooms that may have a small floor area can benefit from high ceilings – something you should take full advantage of! Utilize floor-length curtains to elongate the wall length, or try a two-tone wall to really draw attention to them. If you’re into the classic look, you should see about getting some cornices on your wall to politely demand your visitors’ attention.

There are so many ways that you can make the most of a small space, it’s all about being smart, and daring to be a little unconventional!
