Whether you have completely redecorated or just bought a new piece of furniture, there is nothing like a clean, new wardrobe to make you promise to start keeping your clothes better organized. There are a lot of beautiful wardrobes out there and all of these can make your bedroom look great, but if the things inside are a mess, it can be easy to ruin the look. Here are some ideas for how to organize your things as you move them into your beautiful new closet.
Tips For Organizing Your Clothes
Get New Hangers
The hangers are one of the most important parts of organizing your clothes in your closet. You might think that a hanger is a hanger, but there are different kinds. For example, trousers need hangers with a bar across them, skirts need hangers with clips, and coats, rain jackets, and jackets need heavy-duty wooden hangers.
When you have more than one dress on each hanger, it can be hard to find the one you want to wear, so buy a lot of them. They aren’t very expensive, and they will make your life much easier, both when you move your things into your new closet and when you start using them every day and need to find something.
Sort Your Stuff
Some things, like shirts and dresses, need to be hung up. Other things, like underwear, need to go in the drawers. Some things, like jeans, you may want to put on shelves inside the closet. And then there are probably some things, like casual tops and tees, that can be hung, put on shelves, or put in drawers.
Sorting things into piles and putting them where they belong makes it much easier to organize. Don’t forget to make a separate pile of things you find in your closet that you don’t want anymore. These items can then be sold or given to charity.
Hang Long Things First
Some clothes, like full-length coats and maxi dresses, need the full length of the closet to hang properly. Depending on how your new closet is set up, only a small part of the inside may have full-length hanging space (for instance some modern wardrobes have drawers in them or half of the space might be taken up with a second, lower hanging bar).
Since these things take up the most room, hang them first so you can see how much room you have left for the smaller things.
What Happens When You Run Out Of Space?
At first, your new closet may have seemed huge, but now that you’ve started putting things in it, you may run out of space sooner than you thought. If this happens, you might want to put one season’s worth of clothes (like winter coats if it’s summertime now) in vacuum-sealed bags and put them away until you need them.
If you don’t have a place to store your clothes at home, you can always look into storage unit cost and rent a small storage unit. So, you won’t have to get rid of anything to make room in your closet.
You may have solved your problem quite easily in this way. When the new season starts, you can go get the clothes out of storage and put the old ones back where they belong. This is a great way to save space: switch summer clothes for winter clothes and vice versa.
